The Mayor says...
“The opening of the extensions to the domestic wing of Christchurch International Airport is another important milestone in the history of our municipal airport.
“I think it is true to say that our citizens have come to expect as normal, progressive and exciting new developments at their airport, and thus even such a major project as the one just completed involving over $2) million does not really cause much surprise. Because of the consistently progressive policies adopted by successive councils over many years, it would be unusual if something important was not happening or being planned in our airport facilities. “The newly completed domestic wing extensions will be widely appreciated by the growing number of internal air travellers and by visitors to the airport. “The next challenge to the public utilities committee of the City Council, which has the responsibility for the airport, is to proceed as soon as possible with the urgently-required overseas terminal extensions. With the increasing
number of large overseas aircraft coming to this country and, we trust, a greater number of direct flights, it is in the national interest that our facilities be expanded to give a first-class service to these thousands of tourists whose spending is so important to our overseas exchange earnings. I hope that Government approval will not be long delayed to ensure an early start to the overseas wing.” — H. G. HAY, Mayor of Christchurch.
