Aircraft inquiry delay
t Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 24. Technical evidence has delayed the return from Auckland of the man beading the inquiry into what caused an Air New Zealand DCB iet to fly low over the northern Wellington hillside suburb of Newlands on Sunday night. Captain E. T. Kippenberger, the Civil Aviation Division’s assistant director in charge of flight operations, was due to return to Wellington this afternoon to continue the inquiry. However. Mr I. F. B. Walters. the Director of Civil Aviation, said in Wellington tonight that the inquiry would continue in Auckland for probably two more days, while Captain Kippenberger studied technical evidence. The inquiry is being held in camera, and details of it will not be released until it is completed — now probably early next week. Captain Kippenberger flew to Auckland on Tuesday to interview the crew and to study information transcribed from the black box flight recorder taken from the DCB. The inquiry—the first for such an incident at Wellington Airport—was prompted by complaints from residents of the Newlands area after the big jet flew at what was described as house-level over Newlands while making, an instrument approach through mist and rain.
