Torture allegation Left-wing Peronists allege that hundreds of Argentine political prisoners are being tortured in prisons throughout the country, the tortures ranging from burning with acids to drug treatments and fake executions. The Leftwingers have urged the Peronist Government to appoint a committee of inquiry. — Buenos Aires. Plea to Suharto The Swedish Pen Club has sent a telegram to President I Suharto of Indonesia, who | will celebrate his tenth year I in power on September 30, asking him to free imprisoned writers and journalists. The telegram mentions in particular the novelist. Pramoedya Ananta Toer, who, the club alleges, has been allowed no contact with his family for 10 years, and who has not been allowed to read or write since he was detained on the island of Bum. —Stockholm. Protest in France France's Left-wing trade union groups have held demonstrations throughout the country to press their demands for higher wages, shorter working hours, and retirement at 60. — Paris. Land loss Fewer Britons should be given burials in future because they are taking up too much space, according to the president of the Federation of British Cremation Authorities, Mr Jack Roberts. “Cremation is not only more hygienic and less harrowing for the mourners, but save Britain 300 acres of land each year," he said. — London.
