Benefits for women

Sir, — After reading the latest addition to the social security benefits, I wonder when the forgotten group of women are to be spared a thought. I refer to those women who attain the age of 60 before their husbands, but are penalised for marrying a younger man. As an example a labourer works out in all weathers for a bring home pay of $6B a 40hour week. We are not entitled to any of the handouts such as cuts in telephone, TV travel, etc, but if we were both 60, we would get $5l a week, and are allowed to earn $BOO a year. Hardly fair is it? — Yours, etc., ONE OF THEM. September 23, 1975
