Concert appreciated
A concert by young players was given in the C.sA. Gallery yesterday afternoon to an appreciative and fairly large audience. The programme began with Susan Hogg playing Beethoven’s Sonata No. 8 in C minor (the “Pathetique”) Miss Hogg is strong and flexible fingers, producing oright tone of firm quality. She played in lively fashion with fairly wide expressive range. The piano at the gallery is not a particularly sensitive one for finding finely graded expression, particularly at soft levels, and excessive resonance detracts from claritv at high speeds. < Miss Hogg played Schu-, mann’s "Soaring” in bright style, bringing out the adventurous character of the piece., but a good deal of the clarity of the figurations was lost!
in the echo. Dohnanyi’s “March on a Ground Bass” is a joyful work with attractive sonorities, and was reasonably successful in spirited performance. Lack of clarity detracted from the necessary joie de vivre in “Puck” by Grieg. Kathryn Wilkinson and Katherine Walshe (violins), Rolf Bathurst (viola), and Douglas Paterson and Ann Clark (celli) played Boccherini’s Quintet in C major with disciplined cohesion, creditable searching for variety in expression, and with pleasing balance. There was ■unanimity in timbres, but the 'booming resonance of the ihall did not favour much [subtlety in nuance. The quintet is a charmingly fresh- | sounding work, with graceful interweaving of parts.
