Bus fumes
Sir, —I was very interested to read Mr Taylor’s reply to your correspondent, re buses waiting in the Square. I know from personal experience that the 9.15 p.m. St Albans Park bus regularly waits from seven to 12 minutes, engine running. I don’t think I have ever known it to wait less than five minutes, and it rarely leaves before 9.19 p.m. As my reason for catching the bus is a desire to save fuel I find this habit more than a little distressing.—Yours, etc., ST ALBANS RESIDENT
August 25, 1975. [Mr M. G. Taylor, general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board, replies: “I would thank your correspondent for the information and inform him that since receipt of his letter the departure time of this particular trip has been kept under surveillance. During that time it has, on no occasion, departed later than 9.15 p.m. Instructions have been given that should any occasion arise when the departure is delayed—for example because of late running of connecting trips—then the inspector in charge is to ensure that engines are not left running
if standing time is likely to exceed our two-minute limit.”]
