Sumner’s squash upset

Svmntr lurprixd with a comfortable victory over Christchurch I In the latest round of the A grade squash competition. The fast-improving lefthander. John MacDougall, started the ball rolling with a rare victory in straight sets over Roger Monk. Monk was unable to find his usual length, while MacDougall's drop shots were right on target, and he conceded only nine points. The Sumner No. 3. John Christensen. too. would not normally be expected to beat his opponent, the youthful Alan Corkin, and the possibility seemed even more remote when he appeared on the court, visibly battered : after a hard week in the national I hockey tournament. But the Olympic representative played right up to his best and recovered from being two sets to one down to take the match with fine retrieving and placement. Paul McFadzien, fresh from a successful tour with the Neu Zealand Universities team —he j lost only one match—looked; sHarp in the first game against Viv Hargreaves 'Old Boys D, | but his form fell away sadly

■ from then and he was unable i I to win another game. I; Burnside were a depleted side 'and only won one match, leaving High School Old Boys II—- - which had the bye—still clearly 'in the lead for the Wilson 11 Shield. r In the women’s matches. ' Suburbs was unable to field a -i side against the competition 5 leader, High School Old Boys, i and had to default—the second team to do that this season. ' 1 All the Sumner players tried '(hard against their stronger • Burnside opponents and Sharon 1 Lane and Pat Boland did par- [ tlcularly well to take a game ,each off Margo Davenport and ■ | Joanne Burbjdge respectively.
