The pulling power of TVl’s 6.30 p.m. news is reflected in ratings from another independent survey of two-channel viewing in Auckland.
A McNair survey shows that TV2 builds up a lead during the afternoon, reaching a peak of 59 per cent to 41 per cent between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Then along comes the TVI news at 6.30 p.m. and viewers switch channels in droves. Television Two has to spend the evening trying to woo viewers back a difficult and frustrating job. Complementary programming will not allow the networks to put on their
news at the same time so the channel that comes up with the news first — TVI in this case — has a head start in the race for viewers.
The survey shows that TVI enjoys a comfortable 55-45 advantage over TV2 in prime time ratings, and a margin of 52-48 throughout the day.
However, TV2 is reported pleased at the outcome as it did not think it would be so close to the established network. Only on Tuesdays, with the audience-pulling hour-long “Little House on the Prairie” does TV2 maintain a slim 4-3 lead. Viewers engrossed in this programme are evidently reluctant to drop it in the middle to switch to the TVI news.
