The third seed, Manuel Orantes (Spain), in one of the greatest comebacks in tennis at Forest Hills, fought off five match-points to defeat the second seed, Guillermo Vilas (Argentina). 4-6, 1-6, 6-2. 7-5, 6-4, to reach the U.S. Open final. Orantes’s incredible uphill triumph — he was down 0-5 and at match-point five times in the fourth set — put him in the final against the defending champion, Jimmy Connors. ‘ Connors, the top seed, reached the finals about five hours earlier when he eliminated the fifth seed, Bjorn Borg (Sweden), 7-5, 7-5, 7-5. Earlier the women’s seed, Chris Evert, wmn her first United States Open title when she came from behind to defeat the fifth seed, Evonne Goolagong (Australia), 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The Orantes-Vilas match did not finish until 10.29 p.m. local time, and it left the gallery limp from excitement. Connors battled for just short of three hours against the 19-year-old Swede.
