11 die on roads at week-end
Eleven persons died at the week-end as a result of road accidents, including three young men, two of them brothers, in a head-on collision on the main highway two miles south of Hastings on Saturday evening. They were
Edward Flyne Browne, aged 20, and
Victor James Browne, aged 17, the sons of Mr and Mrs B R. Browne, of Pooks Road. Henderson, Auckland; and Roderick William Dwight, aged 17, the son of Mr and Mrs B. W. Dwight, of Kauri Road, Whenuapai.
A brother of Edward and; Victor Browne, Terry; Reginald Browne, aged 18. i suffered bruising, concussions, and minor leg injuries. The Browne brothers’ father, Mr Barry Browne,; was British Empire welter-j weight boxing champion ini the 19505. The driver of the other j car, Lindsay William Irwin,! aged 27, of Hastings, was admitted to hospital withl serious facial, internal, and leg injuries. He was described yesterday as being seriously; ill, but improving. Pedestrian killed In Christchurch, an elderly; man died in the Christchurch Hospital from injuries: suffered when he was struck • bv a car in Cashel Street last; Thursday night. He was Leonard Houghton, aged 77 of 60 Curietts Road.j Upper Riccarton. Mr Houghton suffered extensive head and chest injuries in the accident. Car in lagoon A girl was killed when the; car in which she was travel-! ling crashed through a| wooden barrier and plunged! into the Haumoana lagoon.! near Clive, on Saturday. She was Janis Noeline Jackson, aged 20. The car was submerged ini the lagoon, and Miss Jack-1 son was dead when helpers l reached the scene. The! driver. Miles Peter Young, aged 20, of Hastings, was un-i injured. Car hits bridge A woman died, and her husband and children were injured, when their car struck a bridge half a mile south of Paekakariki about noon on Saturday. She was Mrs Cho Chung, of Welling-; ton.

She was Caroline Seach, aged eight, of Tawa. Her parents, Edward Seach and Elizabeth Seach, were I late last evening in a serious condition in the Palmerston North Hospital. Child hit by car A small girl was killed at New Plymouth yesterday [afternoon when she was I struck by a car. She was Joanne Pasco, aged three, the daughter of Mr and Mrs I J. Pasco, of Waiwaka | Terrace, New Plymouth. Car cut in two In Auckland early on Saturday, one man died and | another was seriously injured when the car in which they I were travelling was cut in [two after hitting a power I pole in Sandringham Road.
