But WHO was the Mayor? Shakespeare employs him For a Bit Part or Two. With no Name, little to say, And Less to do — ‘Enter in the hurly-burly The Lord Mayor’ — Sir. He’s more of a Stage Effect Than a Character: Excent for Dick Wittington. Who owes to the Nursery The Name — but None of the Money He made out of Mercery — Whose Dad was a Knight before him. Who never had a Cat — Who financed two Kings (the Lord Mayor said), Now, how about THAT?
