Lincoln exodus irks
The Lincoln College council is worried* about the number of students leaving the campus halls !of residence to live in Christchurch.
A council meeting yesterday heard that about 90 students had left the campus during the year to live in flats in the city. The college principal (Professor J. D. Stewart) said that about 30 of those who had left had planned to move
on anyway or had finished their courses. One of the reasons given for the moving of the other students was that Lincoln was a “dreary place” at week-ends. Also, it was a long distance from the city, and public transport services were poor. Professor Stewart said the trend was disturbing as it made budgeting difficult for the halls of residence. The council decided to ask the Lincoln College Students’ Association whether it could make the campus more
attractive socially at weekends. It noted that some other universities had their own student residents’ organisations or activities officers catering for those who lived on the campus. The meeting also discussed student rents on the campus and decided to increase these from $36 to $4O per week for four-person flats to meet rising costs. It further decided to drop from next February «a provision allowing students to sublet their flats.
