RECORD-BREAKER

Peter Jellyman (pictured), Linwood’s trusty goal-kicker, failed to score in the grand final of the senior Rugby championship, but still broke the season’s record for most points with an aggregate of 172. The previous best mark of 167 points was set by Jellyman in 1973. He has now reached a century of points in each of six seasons.

Another scoring record will be broken if David Stead (Belfast) reaches a century of points before the D.C.L. Shield series comes to an end.

Last season seven senior players bettered 100 points in competition games; so far this year seven players have attained the figure and Stead needs only three more points to swell the number to eight.

Leading scorers are:— Jellyman, 172; Rob Gardiner (Lincoln College), 154; Ray Stanbury (Old Boys), 142; Doug Heffernan (University A), 125; Richard Wilson (Christchurch), 117; Dave Bowick (New Brighton), 110; Dennis Smolensk! (Suburbs), 107; Stead 97.

Scott Cartwright (Christchurch) leads the try-scorers with 16, followed by Randall Scott (University A), 14; Trevor White (New Brighton) and Fergie McCormick (Linwood), 10; and Ricky Knight (Christchurch), Andrew Tweedie (Shirley) and Mark Codlin (Lincoln College), nine.
