Sponsor bans South Africa

I (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. The sponsors of the world water-ski championships at Chertsey, Surrey, next month, say that South Africa will not be permitted to compete. Mr Alan Ensor, managing director of Leisure Sport, a subsidiary company of the sponsors, Ready Mix Concrete, said the sponsor had bowed to pressure by the British Government and had asked the South Africans to withdraw. If they did not do so they would be refused the right to compete. “We are very reluctant to do this,” Mr Ensor said. “The principal reason for it is that a sponsor cannot be asked to go against the interest of his own Government. “Secondly, we considered it better to hold a world championship with one country missing than not to hold a championship at all. The decision was forced on us. There is no alternative.” Earlier this month the British Minister of Sport (Mr Denis Howell) said that the Sports Council’s grant of £15,000 towards the cost of holding the championships would be stopped if the South Africans- were allowed to compete.
