The number of unemployed registered with the Department of Labour had increased from 5129 at August 1 to 5254 at August 15, the Minister of Labour (Mr Faulkner) said today.

"The registered unem-; ployed figure on August 15 is the same as that recorded at mtd-July,” he said. A fluctuation during off-, season periods when fobs were usually short was to be expected. Decreases in the number of i registered unemployed oc-' curred in seven employment! districts. Four hundred and forty-1 four extra fobs had been pro-| vided under the Government’s special work schemes j since August 1. At August' 15, 4750 persons were em-| ployed in the various schemes j with Government depart- 1

. ments, hospital boards, and 'local authorities. Vacancies recorded by the Department of Labour decreased by 185, from 2056 at August 1 to 1871 at August 15. Male vacancies were ! 1528. and female vacancies 333. A total of 3115 beneficiaries were being paid unemployment benefits on August 15. Increases in the number of i registered unemployed oc- ! curred in 13 employment districts. the largest being 106 I in the Rotorua district. This Iwas due in part to workers moving into the district and to an increase in unemployment in the Whakatane area.
