Sun about to shine at Scott Base

New Zealand’s 11-man wintering-over party at Scott Base, Antarctica, hopes to set eyes on the sun tomorrow —for the first time in almost five months. Last week-end the sun made a brief appearance above the frozen Ross Sea horizon—marking the end of the long Antarctic night. But it has been obscured so far for the men at Scott Base.

Visibility was down to three feet on Wednesday as a 112km/h wind raged at Scott Base, according to a report from the officer-in-charge (Mr J. Newman). “Noone is allowed outside just now, but we expect the weather to blow itself out by Saturday.”

Mr Newman said that the men, who would begin returning to New Zealand in October, were looking forward to “feeling sand and green grass underfoot, and seeing trees.” The winter had been especially cold this year. Temperatures of —4odeg. had been common, and a few weeks ago a low of —s6deg. was recorded — o.9deg. away from a record.
