No wives attend

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Aug. 22. The equality-conscious Otago Boilermakers’ Union has run into a snag with its policy of allowing wives of members to attend the monthly union meetings. Since the 81-member union introduced its policy in March this year, it has held four meetings, but only one wife has attended. The union’s secretary, Mr F. R. Smitheram, attributes the non-attendance to the time the meetings are held —5 p.m. Nevertheless, the union remains confident that wives will take a close interest in industrial matters. “If anything contentious comes up, they’ll be along,” Mr Smitheram said. It might be some time before that happens. Industry sources say that it has been about 18 years since the Otago Boilermakers’ Union w’as involved in a serious dispute.
