Poor man’s luck

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) MURFREESBORO (Arkansas), August 21. Mr W. W. Johnson, aged 62, a retired school maintenance man, has found a clear white 16.37 carat diamond at the Crater of Diamonds State Park, in' Arkansas, the only diamond mine in North America.

A spokesman for the State Department of Parks and Tourism said that the diamond appeared to be flawless, and was comparable to the Star of Arkansas, which was found at the diamond mine in 1957 and was last sold for $85,000. “I guess if I can get a pretty good price — I’m a poor man — I guess I will sell it, and I might buy me a home down in Arkansas,” said Mr Johnson whose find was made on his first visit to the Crater of Diamonds. He, his wife, his daughter an/, son-in-law, and two grandchildren had been hunting for about two hours when he saw the tip of the diamond glistening in the sunlight.

“They had had a big rain, see, and it washed the point out,” Mr Johnson said. “The sun hit it. I went over and just dug it out with my fingers?’
