There may be an extra three or four-race series for Formula 5000 cars in March and April next year, the Press Association reports. It would follow the national championship series and the international races. A recent decision by the Motorsport Association will permit the use of engines such as the 3.4litre Capri units used in some saloons last season. Early tests of the new Hesketh Formula 1 car — a design that has been described by some overseas writers as “sensational” — have shown the car to be considerably faster than the present model, British correspondents have reported. The main features of the design are said to be an unusually narrow track, and a very low frontal area. ® # #
Starting flags are no longer being used at the British Silverstone circuit: races are now started by a drag-race style system of lights.
The United States driver Mario Andretti has said that he will concentrate on Formula 1 events next season, dropping United States races.
