New gym. for school
Tenders will be called soon for a second gymnasium. estimated to cost more than $120,000, for Burnside High School. Parents of pupils attending the school have taken out debentures worth more than $34,000 towards the cost of the building, and the Government has contributed $85,000.
School authorities hope that the building will be completed in 1977 and they believe it will be an important community asset. The present gymnasium is booked out by community groups ■ every school day from 5 p.m. Ito 10 p.m. The building will be 1 of ‘more than 6000 sq. ft — much larger than the present gymnasium. Bumside High School Board of Governors will also investigate soon the building of another addition for the school but this will be erected many miles from the school site in Memorial Avenue. ■ The school is negotiating for the lease of land that was once part of the Te Kinga School, near Lake Brunner, on the West Coast. The school hopes to establish an outdoor activities centre there to be used by parties of school pupils and staff.
