Netball strength in depth

Canterbury showed its deep strength in netball when the province’s representative under 21 team beat South Canterbury, 31-25, at the Hagley courts on Saturday.

South Canterbury had already beaten the Canterbury senior team this season, but the young Canterbury players rose to the occasion and dictated play for most of the game against their experienced opponents.

Assisted by the nimble movements and accurate shooting in the circle by Jocelyn Fowke, Canterbury established a fivepoint lead at half-time. South Canterbury’s attacks

often foundered on the close marking and well-timed interceptions of the Canterbury defenders. Julie Wilson was especially prominent in this respect. The Canterbury defence maintained its pressure throughout the Second half, and South Canterbury was unable to narrow the gap. Lyndsey Puge, the Canterbury goal-shoot, compared favourably with the seasoned South Canterbury representative, Kay Hobson. SENIOR MATCH Sacred Heart finished runner-up in the senior competition after narrowly thwarting a determined challenge from Teachers’ College. The play of the Teachers’ College team has improved considerably through the season, and it was a little unlucky to lose, 21-22. Teachers’ College held a slight lead in the first half and was

ahead, 10-9. at the Interval. Players on both sides were alert for the interceptions and quick to capitalise on mistakes. However, Sacred Heart rallied well in the second half, Jocelyn Fowke contributing much towards her team’s narrow win with crucial goals. Pauline Flynn and Brenda Rowberry both played aggressive matches for the winner.

Carol Honeybone, the College goal-shoot, shot accurately for her team in spite of receiving close attention from Flynn. Final points in the senior grade which finished on Saturday were:—

Section A: Technical 25, Sacred Heart A 19. Teachers’ College 17, Riccarton 15. Burnside 10.

Section B: Hagley 17, St Nicholas 9, Cashmere 8. New Brighton 7, Sacred Heart B 3.
