Separated twins improve

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) MELBOURNE, August 10. The Siamese twins successfully separated in a three hour and a half operation yesterday, made good progress today and might be home with their mother within three weeks. Mr Peter Jones, who led a team of 25 surgeons in the operation, said tonight the babies’ chances of survival were now better than 50-50.

"And each day they improve so do their chances,” he said.

The babies were delivered by caesarean section at the Mercy Maternity Hospital about 5 p.m. on Friday and sent immediately to the Royal Children’s Hospital. Normally no separation attempt is made for several days? but because of a bowel complication, surgery was urgent. The team rehearsed for about three hours before operating. Doctors and staff at both hospitals are respecting a request by the parents to remain anonymous. Mr Jones said the babies were joined at the lower breast bone to the navel—the most favourable join for separation;
