FIJI THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS is seeking applications under New Zealand’s bilateral aid programme for the positions of General Manager and Ranch Manager, for a large integrated beef cattle, timber and cash cropping development scheme to be situated at Ra, Fiji, on Crown and Native land which has been formed into a corporation by the landowners for the purpose of agricultural development. The appointments are for an intial period of three years with the possibility of an extension for a further two years. The development of this enterprise will include improvement of the stock line through imported cows and bulls, progeny selection, and the improvement of pasture. The number of cattle involved in the scheme will have risen to several thousand over the next 10 years, on an area in excess of 40,000 acres. GENERAL MANAGER QUALIFICATIONS: The applicant should have had theoretical training and practical experience in agricultural economics, and be fully conversant with farm accounting procedures. He should have had experience in the management and financial control of a large scale agricultural development. DUTIES: The General Manager will be responsible to the Uluisaivou Land Corporation Board, and his principay tasks will be the provision of information to the Board, the execution of Board decisions, and the effective adminstration of the techniques of land, economic and staff development. He will be stationed in Suva. RANCH MANAGER QUALIFICATIONS: Preeference will be given to applicants who have undertaken theoretical training in agriculture, and who hold at least a Diploma in Agriculture, as well as pratcical experience. DUTIES: The Ranch Manager will be responsible to the Board through the General Manager for the efficient running of the beef and arable crop enterprise of the Corporation. In particular he will be expected to supervise and train local staff in sound husbandry methods. He will also be required to train a local counterpart who will eventually assume the position of Ranch Manager. He will be based at Ra.
