Orchestra wows Aberdeen

After auditions in Aberdeen, Scotland, 23 of the 56 players in the New Zealand National Youth Orchestra have been chosen for the International Festival Orchestra. The orchestra’s publicity director (Mr K. Hambleton) said he received notification of the selections from Aberdeen today, together with further favourable reviews of the orchestra’s performance in the opening concert of the international festival 'of youth orchestras on Monday night. A review from Aberdeen’s evening newspaper reads:; “The concert commenced! with ‘Aotearoa,’ in which] New Zealand composer,; Douglas Lilburn, expresses] in tone-poem form the] emerging nation. It was a; showcase for a feature of this] orchestra — tonal beauty. “Ashley Heenan in his I Scottish dances joins a line of distinguished composers: who have set forth to ex-; press our dance rhythms in’ orchestral terms. The slowmovement with its economy ’ of line stood out like a gem. I “Soloist Elizabeth Turnbull (of Christchurch), in the Vaughan Williams suite, received with justification an ovation. Her technique was equal to all demands whether; producing ravishing tone or: executing passages with fiendishly difficult double: stopping. Accompanying such a dark-toned instrument is a delicate matter, and Vaughan] Williams often called on the] service of the flute. Full marks to Mary Martin (of!
