More ‘games’ soon

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 8. The Council for Recreation and Sport is to enter into a joint venture with TV2 to hold “Come Alive” games in a number of New Zealand towns, the Minister of Recreation and Sport (Mr Walding) announced tonight. “These games which aim to involve the whole community are another phase of the successful ‘Come Alive’ campaign,” he said. Mr Walding said that the games would not be games in an established sense. “They will be activities involving a certain amount of skill, and some chance, and will have a large number of people taking part.” A number of teams in a community made up from local clubs, and community organisations would be asked to invent their own games. “The essence of the activities is good fun, and community involvement.” Mr Walding said that the “Come Alive” games would begin next March in some New Zealand towns, first as a competition at the community level, then developing into a competition between towns and eventually provinces. “In Europe a similar idea, called “Top Town” or "It’s a Knockout,” has been operating for some time, and proved to be very popular.” TV2 proposed to make 13 half-hour programmes in a number of towns yet to be selected.
