Royal tour for jubilee in 1977

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON, August 8. The Queen will “almost certainly” visit Australia and New Zealand during her silver jubilee year in 1977, according to a Buckingham Palace spokesman. The spokesman said today that much of the Queen’s jubilee activity would consist of making extensive tours of Britain and the Commonwealth and “being seen by as many people as possible.” “Australia and New Zealand will almost certainly be included,” he said.

The British Home Secretary (Mr Roy Jenkins) announced yesterday that the Queen’s silver jubilee would be celebrated in the (northern) summer of 1977. Mr Jenkins said the Queen’s wish was that “undue expenditure should be avoided.” “I don’t know whether it would be right to call it a cut-price silver jubilee,” the Palace spokesman said. “Things can be done nicely with no unnecessary expense. “I don’t think anyone would suggest that this should be done on a total shoestring.’’
