Speeds metric today
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31. All road speeds and distances will be in metrics from tomorrow, the changeover becoming effective from midnight. Kilometres will replace miles on road signs and kilometres an hour will reIplace miles an hour on speedI meters. Under the new system, the ; following speeds will apply: Built-up areas: 50 k.p.h. Open roads: 80 k.p.h. Heavy vehicles and trailer towing: 70 k.p.h. A spokesman for the Ministry of Transport predicted little trouble with the new figures. The public had been well informed about metric speeds, he said, and ignorance would be “no excuse.” Those who have not had their vehicle speedometers converted to metrics are advised to stick to the old limits. A quick, but unofficial way of roughly converting kilometres to miles or m.p.h. is to multiply by six and drop the last figure, e.g., 45km becomes 27m., 50 k.p.h. becomes 30 m.p.h.
