Drilling ship leaves ’copter

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, August 3. The drilling ship Glomar Tasman is on her way to Taranaki waters leaving one of her three Alouette helicopters behind in Christchurch.

A report early today that one of the machines was extensively damaged by the gale which struck Canterbury on Friday was confirmed by a spokesman for the drilling rig operator. Bocal, but the manager of Helicopters (N.Z.), Ltd Mr J. Reid, of Nelson, tonight declined to comment on the report.

Two of the Alouette helicopters arrived at Bell Block late today. Bocal’s head of exploration in New Zealand, Mr E. R. Knuckey, said tonight that the damage report was “quite correct.”

He said that a 107m.p.h. gust of wind caught the machine on the ground at 'Christchurch, causing exteni sive damage. It would be three to four weeks before it i could be repaired. Mr Knuckey said that

Helicopters (N.Z.), Ltd had other machines which could be used for Shell, B.P. and Todd Oil Services, Ltd in South Taranaki,

The Glomar Tasman finally got away from the Resolution One drill site off the Canterbury coast at 10.15 a.m. today. She had been delayed several days by the storms in the area.

She is expected to arrive at the Kupe One site off Hawera tomorrow morning, and spudding in 'of the well will follow later' in the week.
