Breast feeding
Sir, —Adrienne McKinnon is fortunate that her baby arrived healthy and alert beside her log fire, not dead, or almost dead, as three out of my four babies did. “Doing it naturally" is satisfactory when things go smoothly, but without the specialist care I received in two Christchurch maternity hospitals, my children and I would not be alive today. La Leche, with their well-meaning but pushy views, tend to make mothers who experience difficulty with feeding, and fail to overcome it, feel they have failed as mothers. My “formula-fed from birth” children enjoy excellent physical, intellectual and emotional health. My “breast-fed with difficulty” child suffers chronic chest trouble and emotional problems not apparent in the others.—Yours, etc., . ANOTHER VIEW August 1, 1975.
