Rapist had knife

(A.Z. Press Association AUCKLAND, July 24. A man armed with a knife, who taped shut the eyes of a 24-year-old Mount Eden woman, and who then raped her in her own bed in the early hours this morning. was still being sought by detectives tonight.

The woman, a clerk, awakened about 2.30 a.m. to find the intruder barefooted and armed with a kitchen knife.

In what detectives de-i scribed as one of the most, brutal rapes in recent times, the man, a heavily-built Polynesian, taped the girl’s eyes and pricked her throat with the knife to make her submit.

It is thought that the man entered a rear door to the house and picked up the knife as he crept towards the woman’s bedroom. FRIEND WOKE

During the half-hour or-: deal, the woman’s 25-year-old: flatmate was awakened. She crept down the hall and called to her friend to see that all was well. Fearing for the lives of her friend and herself, her flatmate told her to go back to bed. Police dogs later followed; a sefent down a trail at the i rear of the house but it i petered out.
