Firemen get down to it
HAMILTON. July 22. Firemen were forced to lie
on their stomachs while fighting a fire in a Taupo shop and office complex early today. Firemen wearing breathing apparatus had to fight the | blaze in a two-storey building m Heu Heu Street lying down when flames prevented them from standing up. Taupo’s chief fire officer (Mr S. K. Christensen) described the seat of the fire as the most difficult to get to in ' his 21 years with the brigade. The rear of the complex was partially gutted, and it took 23 firemen with five engines more than an hour to bring the blaze under control. Several firemen trying to douse flames at the rear stairs escaped injury when the fire burst »through the walls.
