TAX DODGE REGRET
The abilities of accountants and lawyers should not be used to find loopholes in the taxation system, according to the president of the Society of Accountants (Mr I. G. Lithgoe). Mr Lithgoe, in Hamilton yesterday to present certificates to new members of the society, said he re-
gretted the use of “brains” to explore loopholes in the system because it merely meant the tax department had to close them later, the Press Association reports. Everyone should pay taxes appropriate to their income, and by and large this was the case in New Zealand.
“We must bear in mind the top rate of taxation in this country is substantially lower than in manyother countries. “Therefore there should be much less incentive to avoid taxation here,” he said. Mr Lithgoe said that he had no sympathy for people who evaded paying taxes, and he regarded it
as a breach of ethics for any member of the Society ' of Accountants to encourage this. “But problems arise because taxation laws have i become so complex that I the ordinary man cannot keep up with them. This is where the need for the services of an accountant and others in this field comes in,” he said.
