Quail Island

Sir, — I agree with Bill Hoare, that Quail Island could be farmed around the public. Why not leave well alone? Mr Halliwell does a great job, farming and caretaking. If the Lands and Survey Department gives the island over to the public, then it can expect the public to treat it as it does all other public picnic areas. The vandals of today are the public. The Amberley scout group camped early this year on the island. It found service, clean facilities, a welcome, and a goodbye. For the tidy groups it was (“come again”. The Lands (and Survey Department should think again and give Mr Halliwell a 99-year lease, and leave Quail Island the beauty it has. — Yours, etc., J. BEDBOROUGH. President, Amberley Scout groups. July 3, 1975.
