Allegation of threats to witnesses
The Christchurch C. 1.8. is inquiring into alleged threats to two witnesses who were to have given evidence yesterday against two men charged with robbery. Depositions were to be taken before Messrs E. J. Bradshaw and D. M. Hemsley, J.P.s, but the complainant did not arrive to give evidence in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Drago Carl Vrhovnik, aged 17, unemployed, and John David Bryant, aged 18, unemployed, are charged with robbing Zahar Dementyannovitch Fefelov of $2l in cash, a Commonwealth dollar and a packet of cigars, of a total value of $22.50, on May 31. No pleas have been entered. They were further remanded in custody to July 4. Sergeant J. C. Rowe said the complainant had contacted the police last week and said he would not appear to give evidence as he had been threatened by friends of the defendants. Mr T. Sissons, for both defendants, submitted that they had been in custody for three i weeks and that there could] be no substance in the alle-, gations.
