20,000 LATE

As many as 20,000 vehicles may be illegally on the roads in Christchurch today because they have not been relicensed. The Post Office, expecting at least 150,000 vehicles to be relicensed for this year, had handled 110,000 by last Friday and expected, at most, another 20,000 yesterday. The Chief Postmaster (Mr J. S. Smith) said the relicensing had been much slower than last year. He was unable to give any reason for this. Yesterday, at lunchtime. there was a queue outside the motor registration office in the Square. But for the rest of the day things were busy without getting hectic.
