EXTENSIONS AT GALLERY
Tentative plans for extensions to the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, costing an estimated $350,000 and financed by loan and possible grants, have been drawn up for the consideration of the City Council. A preliminary drawing of a building of two floors was placed before the council’s cultural committee yesterday. The building would be located in the Botanic Gardens, south of the existing gallery, and ..ould have a ground floor area of 7000 sq. ft and a second floor of about 4000 *q. ft. The extension would pro- , vide two exhibition areas, • office and storeroom faclli- j ties, an<, storage and load- : Ing bays. The committee decided to
invite leading artists, architects, landscape designers, councillors, and officers to consider the tentative proposal. It will also be referred to the parks and recreation committee for observation. A temperature and humidity control system, costing about $27,000. is to be installed in part of the gallery. Its purpose is to protect and conserve delicate works of art belonging to or on loan to the gallery. Provision for the work is contained in this year’s estimates.
