BOILERMAKER STALEMATE Sacked 21 refuse to sign terms

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, June 30.

Boilermakers have rejected another attempt to have work resumed on the Bank of New Zealand site in Wellington. The 21 boilermakers, riggers, and trade assistants sacked 19 days ago refused to sign terms of employment when they reported for work this morning.

The sub-contractor for structural steel on the site. Fletcher BernardSmith and the Federation of Labour had agreed on a resumption of work.

The Boilermaker’s Union had asked for the federation’s intervention. Outstanding matters were to be discussed as soon as the men were back at work.

The terms of employment j the men refused to sign were those laid down by an independent arbitrator for the job and those in the boilermakers’ award.

The engineering manager of Fletcher Bernard-Smith (Mr T. H. Baker) said tonight that the company was prepared |to take the dismissed men ion again as soon as they signed terms of employment.

The men were dismissed! because of a continuing go-1 slow in support of their ( wage claim of $2.80 an hour,! plus a $56 a week tax-free,! cost-of-living allowance.. Rates agreed to for the job

are $2.33 for a boilermaker! and $2.43 for a welder. . The secretary of the Boiler, makers’ Union (Mr C. Devitt) said tonight that no company representatives arrived at the site to sign the men on. i The union would meet representatives of the main contractors. Civil and Civic, and the B.N.Z. later this i week, he said. 1 Mr Devitt also said tonight (that he wanted Fletcher Bernard-Smith sacked as the sub-contractor on the site. However, Mr Baker said the company had contract obligations, and "I don’t think the boilermaker’s union or anybody else can get us sacked.”

The company would contact the F.O.L. tomorrow to find out what the next move i should be. ■ It was also awaiting some .move from the Minister of] Labour (Mr Faulkner). '
