Mass escape in Portugal
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) LISBON, June 30.
Former agents of the old Portuguese regime’s hated secret police last night arranged a mass escape from the country’s newest security prison.
A total of 88 former agents hauled themselves over the walls of Alcoentre Prison, east of Lisbon, using their sheets, but 13 had been recaptured by this morning.
The Armed Forces’ Information Service says that an inquiry will be held into how the agents were able to break out of the prison, adding that “popular forces” are helping troops to recapture the prisoners.
Alcoentre Prison, opened only last month, housed 843 of the more than 1300 former agents and informers imprisoned since the military overthrew the old Right-wing regime in April, 1974.
