Sammy, the llama at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Hussey Road, needs a mate to distract him, and so prevent him from spitting at visitors. The director of the reserve (Mr M. H. Willis) said that a female companion was being sought for Sammy in the hope that she would have a “stabilising effect on his temperament,” and distract him from spitting at people. The reserve has just opened an enclosure for wallabies, and work is expected to begin soon on enclosures for monkeys and some species of cat.
The wallaby enclosure has been made of natural timbers to give the impression of a forest background, and logs have been put in the pen to- make natural lairs. Two new buildings in the zoo grounds would be used as an administration block and as an animal sick-bay, Mr Willis said. It was hoped that a quarantine quarter could be established so that more exotic animals could be brought to the zoo. The farmyard exhibit was
expected to be completed in the spring. This would include domestic animals, such as sheep, cows, pigs, goats, fowls, and horses, for the benefit of people, especially children, who did not have the opportunity to visit a farm. Mr Willis said it was hoped that in the spring the zoo would be open seven days a week, instead of only during week-ends, and public and gchool holidays as at present.
