Agreement on summit
(N.Z.P. A.Reuter —Copyright .• GENEVA, June 27. The European Security Conference reached genera!; agreement that it could;
finish soon at summit levelj in Helsinki, but it deferred a decision on the opening date! for the finale, delegates have said. The conference’s executive committee, which comprises the delegation heads of the 35 participating nations, decided to meet again today to discuss the date for the Helsinki third stage. Western delegates said agreement on the summit date was impossible now, because negotiations on several outstanding issues were still going on. Nevertheless, delegates from both East and West Europe said after a two-and-a-half hour meeting at the lakeside conference building; that there had been general( accord that the talks could wind up soon in the Finnish capital. The Soviet Union and its; Warsaw Pact allies had! pressed for a definite starting date to be named. But! this was resisted by the West and several neutral and non-aligned nations,! which said that an. opening( date could not be settled until outstanding questions' [had been resolved.
