ASHBURTON. (N.Z. Press Association) New Zealand should be saving, not borrowing, its way out of its economic difficulties, said Sir John Marshall, in an interview in Ashburton today. “It is quite clear we have been living beyond our means,” he said. The economy cried out for a firm hand and was not getting it Imports had been allowed to get out of hand, and action would have to be taken to reduce the level of imports to a volume the country could afford.

Sir John said that a National Government would place emphasis on increased production and productivity.

Even the Australian Government was realising profit was not a “dirty word,” and that it was essential for industry to be profitable, he said.
