Chatham Cud soccer
(By
DERRICK MANSBRIDGE)
Soccer moves from the bread-and-butter stuff of the Rothmans National !League to the suddendeath fervour of the i Lion Chatham Cup, when the second round of the knock-out competition is played today. : Sixteen teams will be striv- ! ing for a place in the national open draw for the quarterfinals, and for another crack at the trophy Christchurch United will be defending against Caversham in Dunedin. Whatever else happens — and something usually does — no more than four national ; league clubs will be left in the last eight. Either United [or Caversham will be the I sixth casualty from the ; national ranks. ft would be a miracle even more than a major surprise if Blockhouse Bay failed to : beat Metro 'College, or if Mount Wellington succumbed ; to Glenfield Rovers, but the other national league side in
the second round, Stop Out, cannot be happy with its draw. The Lower Hutt club, lying second in the league, meets Wellington-Diamond United at the Basin Reserve, and Diamond has already ac- | counted for one national [ league side, Wellington City, | 4-1, and would dearly love to add another scalp. Among the meetings of the non-nationa] league clubs, the j one that stands out is be-1 tween Hamilton and Whanga- [ rei City. Both caused first-1 round upsets, Hamilton by] putting out North Shore; United, and Whangarei by' eliminating Manurewa, the [ Northern League leader. This i match is probably the most, open of all in the second [ round.
Undoubtedly, . the Caver-sham-United affair will be a tight one. Caversham, now that it has moved away from; the national league relegation I zone, will want a successful I I cup r-un to keep its growing' : band of supporters happy.; 1 And there is no-one happier! than supporters celebrating a! cup victory. Equally determined will bei i United to retain a hold on the ; I Chatham Cup and keep in its ! sights the double that only Blockhouse Bay has achieved, : and that in 1970 when there : were only eight clubs in the I league. Caversham will miss its i : cup-tied strikers, Steve Bent- 1 ley and Terry Breen, but has the depth of players to make! United struggle.
