Maine changes Marijuana law

(N.Z. Press Association) AUGUSTA (Maine), June 19. Governor James Longley yesterday signed legislation making the possession of a small amount of marijuana [after March 1, 1976, a civil, 'rather than a criminal, offence in Maine, already the i second American state to [pass such a measure. Oregon has a similar law. Under the measure, a perjson possessing less than 11 lounces of marijuana will be subject to a fine of up to SUS2OO. There will be no prison sentence or criminal record. In the past, a person possessing a single marijuana cigarette could have been fined SUSIOOO and sentenced up to 11 months in prison.
