New Greek President

The Greek Chamber of Deputies has elected Mr Constantine Tsatsos, who is 76. as the country’s first President since the "abolition of the monarchy, by 210 !votes to 65. There were 20! blank votes. Mr Tsatsos will serve for five years. Mr Panayotis Canellopoulos, the last civilian Prime Minister before the coup d'etat in April. 1967, received 65 votes. His name had been put forward by the Centre Union Party led by Mr George Mavros, and although he had not confirmed his candidature, voting slips with his name on them were distributed to members of the House. Communist members and members of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement led by Mr Andreas Papandreou returned blank votes.
