CAR-PURCHASE GAP GROWING
The growing gap between the trade-in price of a second-hand car and the price of a new car is worrying the British motor trade. In spite of heavy discounts on some new cars, the situation is further depressing new-car sales generally. . A year ago, a British buyer who traded in a two-year-old 1500 c.c. car on a new model had to find about $9OO to make the change. Now he must find about $1560, and by the beginning of next vear, it has been predicted, the gap
- eould have grown to $1950. f Some dealers have des- > cribed this situation as . “terrifying”, and say the; - only answer is to push upi r used-car prices and narrow) 7 the gap. But because the British ; r market is at present over-) supplied with used cars, I 1 such price rises seem un-, ' likely. J Incentives to British » new car-buyers at present i include a free supply of » petrol, free holidays on the t Continent, and big price ? cuts.
