CROSSING REFUSED

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Efforts to get a pedestrian crossing at Lillian Street on Halswell Road, which were initiated three years ago by the Halswell Road Action Committee, have again been unsuccessful after a decision bv the National Roads Board at its monthlv meeting in Wellington today. The board first considered this request on Anril 19. 1972, and declined it then because the volume of traffic was much below the figure normally required. At the same time, the board declined a request to institute a 30-miles-an-bour zone, again because there was not enough traffic to iustifv it. In 1973. the Ministry of Transport examined the situation again, and said that “pedestrian volumes are light and spread along the highway in such a manner that use of a crossing is unlikelv.” At that time, the Automobile Association (Canterbury) agreed with the Ministry.

This year the Panama Countv Council raised the matter again, but the National Roads Board said that fresh traffic counts taken by the Ministry of Transport had shown no increase on the figures taken in 1973.
