The scene of the controversy over the extraction of coal for export on the West Coast. Mount Davy, the site of the proposed mining activity, dominates the skyline in this picture which was taken overlooking part of Dunollie, near Runanga. The view looks up Seven Mile Creek, which leads to Rewanui.
Those opposed to the export of coal from the mine, including conservationists, do not accept that it cannot be used in New Zealand and say that it should not be exploited as a matter of course.
The organisers of the Campaign Against Foreign Control in New Zealand say the scheme should not go ahead unless the company concerned with the mining is 100 per cent New Zealand owned. The member of Parliament for the West Coast (Mr P. Blanchfield) and many other Coasters say the operation of the mine would help revitalise the West Coast and that a good price with allowance for retrospective price adjustments would be negotiated with Japan.
