“OBSERVER” IN TROUBLE

The “‘Observer,” one of Britain’s oldest Sunday papers, may have to suspend publication in the northern autumn unless one third of its 700 staff are sacked, a spokesman for the newspaper said in London last night.
Management and unions will meet tomorrow to discuss the problem. The paper — published since 1791 — has lost £500,000 this yean Its circulation from last October to March, this year, fell to 794,161. It was more than 818,000 for the same period a year before. In 1967 the corresponding figure was 908,000.
