BEST SUCCESS YET BY GRAEME MAIN

Graeme Main (Avonsidei recorded his best table tennis triumph when he won the men's singles final at the Marlborough open championships at the week-end.

Main, a most capable but often [erratic player, ousted the I fiifteenth-ranked Canterbury player, Graeme Rhind, in the semi-finals, and beat the I eleventh-ranked Neville Brightj well In four games in the final. The final contained many exchanges of counter-hitting, but Main proved too consistent. Main and Harry Redmond won the doubles title in straight games.

The nationally-ranked junior, Debbie Looms (Marlborough), outclassed Lynley Barker (Hutt Valley) in the women’s final. Results (players from Canterbury unless otherwise stated) were:—

Men’s singles.—Semi-finals: G. C. Main beat G. J. Rhind. 14-21,' 21-14, 22-20, 21-14; V. N. Brightwell beat H. H. Redmond, 11-21, 21-18 21-16. 22-20. Final: Main [beat Brightwell. 14-21, 21-14, ’22-20 21-14.

Women's singles.—Semi-finals: Mrs ~ L. Barker (Hutt Valley) beat Mrs T. May, 21-13, 21-15, 21-14; Miss D. J. Looms (Marlborough) beat Miss J. R. Waines, 21-17, 21-14. 21-14. Final: Miss Looms beat Mrs Barker, 21-14, 21-17, 21-19. Men’s doubles.—Final: Redmond and Main beat Brightwell and N. B. Radford, 21-19, 21-11, 21-10. Women’s doubles. — Final: Misses Looms and S. Bing beat Mrs May and Miss J. Stead, 18-21, 21-15. 21-14, 21-18. Mixed doubles.—Final: N. Williams and Miss Bing (Marlborough) beat Rhind and Mrs May, 21-15, 17-21. 22-20, 24-22. Men’s plate.—Final: G. Foster beat R. Jury (Nelson), 21-16, 21-17. 21-15. Women’s bracelet.—Final: Miss [Bing beat Miss I. Jimenez (Neljson). 21-13, 21-13. B grade Men’s singles.—Final: B. Roskilley beat J. Mortimer (Nelson). 21-18, 21-18, 21-11. Women's singles.—Final: Miss Stead beat Mrs M. Saul (Marlborough), 21-18, 21-5. 19-21, 21-16.
