CORONER'S COURT Nightdress ignited by cigarette
A woman of 62 who had set fire to her nightdress with a cigarette had taken herself on two crutches to the kitchen where she fetched a bucket of water to put out the embers, the Coroner Mr N G. Hattaway, was told in the Coroner's Court yesterday. The woman was Nora Emily Brown of Winchester Street. L'.tteiton. The Coroner found that she had died in Burwood Hospital on May 7 from bronchopneumonia after burns. Dr A. Jensen said that Miss Brown told her about how she had suffered the 20 per cent burns when she w-as admitted to Burwood Hospital about 11.30 a m. on May 4. . She had said that her nightdress caught fire about 10 p.ra. the night before, but she had not bothered her relatives, who also lived in Lyttelton because she had presumed that they were Pi- 1 Jensen said that Miss Brow'n ad been suffering from a state of shock when she was admitted. CARS COLLIDED Brent Desmond Aitken, aged n died tn Christchurch Hospital r.r December 21 as the result of a stere head iniury suffered whe" a car in which he was a back-seat passenger collided with
another car at the corner of: Shirlex Road and Marshland Road on November 30. Constable I. J. Richan said that the accident occurred about 2.45 a.m. The intersection is controlled by traffic lights and the, drivers of both vehicles had said that they travelled through it on the green phase of the lights. DEATH AFTER OPERATION Lloyd Lorenzo Hindle, aged 71, died at Princess Margaret Hospital on March 28 from acute heart failure associated with a recent operation. SUICIDES Graeme John Hoskins, aged 16. died at Hei Hei on March 24 as the result of a gunshot wound to his head. The Coroner found it was suicide. Valerie Marie Twiss, aged 60. died in Christchurch between May 11 and May 12 from asphyxia due to carbon monoxide. The Coroner found that she had committed suicide. Patrick MeCahill Cannon, aged 55. was found to have committed suicide at Christchurch on May 22. the cause of death being carbon monoxide poisoning. Frederick Meikle Kerr, aged 66. committed suicide at Christchurch on May 10. He died from: a gunshot wound to his head. i
